Our philosophy

FACT was founded on two ideas:

  • "... the most fertile developments in the history of human thought are born at the intersection of two currents of ideas ..." — Werner Heisenberg
  • "The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited." — Plutarch

The intersection of alternative and complementary therapies and conventional medicine holds great promise for the future of our healthcare and well-being.

Quality information on alternative and complementary therapies is an empowering tool for consumers in their effort to assume responsibility for their own health. It is also an essential support for healthcare professionals in their quest to enhance their professional development. To be of value, this information needs to be factual, accessible, credible and ethical.

We promote information rather than individuals or institutions. While we welcome sponsorship, it must be at arm's length. Our information must remain unbiased.

The process of acquiring such information will be democratic and organic:

  • democratic in that all members can contribute as well as use the information
  • organic in that our direction and rate of growth are determined by a consumer-driven process, with contributions from our members and the public.

While the initial focus was Traditional Chinese Medicine, we include all therapies, we learn from all cultures of the world. There is ample room for integration, which enhances health outcomes.

Our members are primarily interested in sharing quality information through learning activities. Issues of service delivery, advocacy, formal education and research are left to other groups.

To learn, one needs to possess an open mind, a humble heart and a discerning eye; no one has a corner on truth. We can only gain by sharing.

Our collective effort, towards a common goal, will accomplish remarkable results.
