It is time to renew your membership in FACT.
As FACT expands its activities, we appeal to you for your continued support. The society is in need of many kinds of volunteer assistance. Any input from you is welcome — ideas, assistance in fundraising, volunteering, website articles and donations are equally appreciated.
Any contribution of time and/or ideas will find its place in the organization. This is a call to you to become involved and participate.

For more information and to register, please visit the membership page.

FACT and Natural Health Care Canada invite you to attend a one-day symposium on October 19, 2009, entitled "Now That I'm Healthy: Creating a Survivor's Guide to Integrative Health Care".

Join us as we bring together survivors, CAM practitioners and practitioners from the mainstream to explore the issues raised by the integration of complementary therapies into post-illness maintenance programs. (This event is in anticiption of a proposed conference on the topic in 2010.)

The roundtable is about developing ideas together so we can assist members of the public who need this type of integrated health care. It seeks to establish information and to set standards for adding and using comlementary therapies in post-medical-treatment situations as part of an integrated health care system.

As a registered charity, FACT supports the integration of complementary and alternative therapies into the health care system, and this initiative is part of our ongoing mission to take a leadership role in this area.

For more information and to register, please visit the Natural Health Care Canada website.

The FACT annual general meeting (AGM) will be held on Sunday, March 22, in the Beeton auditorium of the Toronto Reference Library.

If you are a voting member and cannot make it to the meeting, please fill out your vote proxy naming a FACT member in good standing to act on your behalf. Submit it before March 13. Alternatively, your designated agent can bring it to the meeting.

More information about the FACT AGM is available: including the draft agenda and information about our invited speaker.

The FACT annual general meeting (AGM) has been rescheduled. Originally scheduled for the beginning of February, the new date for the AGM is March 22, 2009. Please join us. Members of the general public are also invited to attend the meeting and hear our speaker, Dr. Zhao, although only FACT members can vote. Membership can be obtained on premises. Members can submit nominations for the Board of Directors until January 31, 2009.

We have updated our CAM news section, and expect to update it several more times this month. Also, we took to heart a member suggestion: that we link to certain Health Canada resources, notably warnings and advisories about health products. You can now see these links on the left of this screen.

As winter grinds on, FACT members continue to work hard to improve the quality of life for their patients. Check out the member event listing to see what is happening in our community.

The blog post this month is about stress and ways that CAM can be used to reduce it and to help us cope. Your suggestions and stories about stress would be very welcome! Click on the word Comments at the end of the post: a comment box allows you to share your comments, anecdotes, suggestions and observations with fellow members of the FACT community.

FACT would like to wish all of you a very happy 2009, filled with health and inner peace. This past year has been one of great change for this organisation: we welcomed a new President, set up a new website, said hello to many new members and hosted some very successful events.

In the coming year, we want to continue to change and grow as a community and we both welcome and encourage your participation. If you would like to suggest ways to improve the website content, write a blog post on a topic near to your heart or come across news or articles that might be of interest to your fellow members, please drop a line to editor@thefacts.org. If you would like to contribute to our growing repository of CAM information, please visit our Community section for details and send an e-mail to wiki@thefacts.org.

As always, we welcome volunteers. Please see our volunteer page or, if you have a particular skill you would like to donate to FACT, please send a us a message.

Finally, we would love to hear your comments, questions and suggestions, which you can send us anytime at messages@thefacts.org, and (of course) donations are always welcome!

Peace and happiness to you all.

Our CAM news collection continue to grow. This month's blog post discusses the latest findings on CAM usage among US adults and children.

As an organisation, we are gearing up for our annual general meeting (AGM), which you are invited to attend on Sunday, February 1, 2009. As in previous years, a speaker will discuss a CAM topic (TBA) before the meeting. This talk is open to the public. The AGM is for members only, however. You can join or renew your membership at the meeting. (location and tentative schedule)

The annual FACT banquet was a great success. Please check the banquet page for a description of the event, a description of the menu, contact information for our suppliers, and how to contact our sponsors. A big thank you to all our sponsors for this event!

We have been adding a lot of CAM news to that section of our website. Please send us anything of note that you come across!

FACT would like to wish members a happy Thanksgiving.

At this time of the year, our thoughts often turn to food, so it seems a perfect time to annouce the big news for this month: we have SOLD OUT the banquet! Our annual Flavours of Harmony banquet, held Sunday, November 9, is our major fund-raising endeavour. This year, we will be taking the time to enjoy a feast of Mediterranean healing cuisine. (flyer) (newsletter)

An article published recently in the New England Journal of Medicine concludes that "Mediterranean and low-carbohydrate diets may be effective alternatives to low-fat diets. The more favorable effects on lipids (with the low-carbohydrate diet) and on glycemic control (with the Mediterranean diet) suggest that personal preferences and metabolic considerations might inform individualized tailoring of dietary interventions." (source)

To become a banquet sponsor or for more information, phone Diane at 416-299-5113 or end us an e-mail.

Calling all members!

Do you have an opinion about anything in the CAM world? Consider contributing an article to our FACT blog, a forum where we hope our community can interact and discuss issues of importance to them and to all of us. Our community is what you make it, consider participating soon!

If you are a member of FACT and would like to launch a discussion on a particular topic, please send an e-mail to our editor, who will give you more details and assist you with any technical issues that may arise.

What would make a good blog topic? A good blog topic generates discussion about anything that affects:

  • the CAM community in general (for example, Bill C-51)
  • the Canadian community at large (for example, Listeriosis and Salmonella outbreaks, the potential effects certain potential governments may have on CAM practice, etc.)
  • new developments in specific disciplines or areas within the CAM or Integrative Medicine world

We look forward to hearing from you! The more articles you submit and comment on, the more useful this forum will be to you and to our community.

September 3
